Aging in place with flexibility to expand.
new build / 2,000 sq. ft.
The Madrona residence was created for clients planning simultaneously for immediate and future housing needs. They wanted to design their home in the short term to fit their aging parents' requirements, which included disguised safety for one parent with late stage Alzheimer's. For the same reason, our clients knew they would eventually move into the space; the vision needed to take into account adding another 1,000 square feet at some point over the next ten years. The design consists of a series of volumes attached by glass enclosures or breezeways, allowing the addition to integrate in a similar fashion, seamlessly into the main structure. The backyard has decks that double the building’s square footage. All doors except the front open to the back, allowing the Alzheimer’s patient to go through and “leave” the house while remaining in a safe place without feeling confined.
